A New York man, by the name of Pierre Carrenard, was sentenced Thursday to 28 years to life in prison for murder. He built a voodoo shrine using his girlfriend's underwear, then killed her mother, a dog, and slashed her cousin's face. Sentenced 25 years for killing the woman, two years for the dog, and one year for assaulting a 16 year old girl. On August 9th, his ex-girlfriend (Francisco McDaly) who recently had broken up with him, told police that Carrenard, 36, harassed her after she broke up with him. On the day of the crime, McDaly said Carrenard called her at work, threatening her mother, Esperance Labidou, a Haitian immigrant, who worked at a bus company. Carrenard testified in court stating that he believed Labidou was the reason McDaly turned against him. Prosecutors said Carrenard stabbed Labidou 25 times in her home, then when the teenage cousin entered the basement apartment, Carrenard slashed her face then fled to Florida. While on investigation, police found a shrine in his apartment consisting of McDaly's underwear, and one of his socks tied together with a vine. HE explained that the shrine was a sort of spell to control her spirit. They also found a letter in his apartment saying, "All I want to do is to love you and to make a life with you, but your family keeps on getting in the way. Let this be the last interference. You will no longer listen to your family, you will listen to me." Carrenard was arrested last August in Miami, where he was staying with some friends. He was convicted this month.
My opinion on the whole ordeal is that I really didn't believe in voodoo because it's really not tangible for someone to hurt you with simple dolls and imaginative language. Carrenard got exactly what he deserves. Anyone who could take two lives, and injure another in the process deserves more than imprisonment, but the death penalty.=
