In Bangkok, Thailand the police arrested a Canadian man who was suspected to be a pedophile. A global manhunt for this Canadian teacher named Christopher Paul Neil, ended early Friday in Nakhon Ratchafima, a town about 200 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. According to Maj. Gen. Wimol Pao-in, he was allegedly attempting to contact underage boys in this town. This manhunt was launched when police unscrambled digital photos of Neil allegedly sexually assaulting young boys. Neil, who is 32 years old, arrived in Bangkok, with his head covered by a blue shirt as he was confronted by a swarm of photographers. However, a short time later, he was seated and commanded to uncover his head for a news conference. He sat there with an expressionless face while police officials talked about the case. Neil was wearing a t-shirt, jogging pants, and sunglasses at the press conference where he refused to speak about the accusations. Police spokesman Pongsapat Pongjaren told AP after being prosecuted in Thailand; he would be extradited to Canada. Neil had been working as an English teacher in South Korea and flew from Seoul to Bangkok last Thursday. An arrest warrant was issued in Thailand based on a testimony of a boy who said a Thai man lured him to Neil’s apartment in Bangkok. According to the boy, Neil paid him for sex acts. A worldwide alert was issued after about 200 photographs showing a man sexually abusing 12 different young males were posted on the Internet. However, these photos, which authorities believe were taken in Vietnam and Cambodia in 2002 or 2003, had been digitally altered to disguise the man’s appearance. German investigators were able to reverse and restore the images and his picture was distributed around the world. Based on tips from five sources on three continents, the suspect was identified within three days after the photos were released.
