Rwanda: Kenyan Refugees in Food Scarcity

Ashley Snyder/1/18/2008/ 11:30am/Food Scarcity/Post 1

Kenyan in Uganda refugees have begun to run out of food and drugs due to beuracratic disputes dealing with food distribution. Food distribution is supposed to be on a two month ahead plan to ensure shortages like this do not occur, but they have run out of food. Each refugee is given breakfast, a half a kilogram of beans, and a kilogram of maize flour. This totals up to 15 bags of maize flour, and 8 bags of beans a day to feed the refugees.

The shortage is not due to lack of food available to be sent, but to how the World Food Program receives and distributes their supplies. Instead of handling it directly, the WFP goes through the central government, which in turn delays aid to the refugees.

There is disagreement whether the refugees are receiving enough food and drugs and how promptly between the agencies though. People working on the ground (MP William Oketcho) with the refugees say it is inadequate, while those working with the WFP (State Minister for Disaster and Refugees) say everything is being distributed in good amounts and on time.

While the number of refugees to Uganda is growing due to violence in Kenya, the truth on whether they are receiving adequate supplies is unknown, and United Nations spokesman, Emmanuel Nyabera says that an "advance inter-agency mission" has been sent to assess and handle the situation.

This article is only a snippet of what is going on over there, and i'm pretty sure situations like this are occurring wherever refugees are. Too many times it seems that food shortages do not occur due to lack of food, but human differences in distributing the food, which is really disappointing considering food is a basic human right. I can only hope that the "mission" sent to handle the situation does it correctly and does not cause anymore bureaucratic stalls in getting these refugees help.

Your article says that it is debated whether or not they have enought resources. I believe that there are not enough supplies for the refugees. It is interesting to see what really happens that we are not aware of, and what can really be done about this situation.
