UNICEF (The United Nations International Children’s Fund) has partnered with the Confederation of African Football in order to promote “free and universal education for all children.” Experts agree that education is crucial in continued development of Ghana and African nations in general. Ghana currently has an enrollment percent of 78.6%, which is above previous years, but is not enough. The partnership is designed to use the widespread popularity of Soccer in Ghana to help spread the word about universal education. This rigorous focus on primary education for all children is part of UNICEF’s plan for reaching the Millennium Development Goals. Another goal for this program is for Ghana to reach “middle income status by 2015.”
I am glad that the government is acknowledging the importance of education and how it really affects a country in almost every way imaginable. Education is crucial for development on an individual level and certainly it translates into development on a larger scale as well. I also think it is extremely smart that they are using the publicity that Soccer has in Ghana to bring awareness to this issue. Soccer is huge over there and I think this will prove to be an effective way of raising awareness. Generally, education seems to be the last thing fixed when there is a problem and I think its great that UNICEF is trying to improve life in Ghana by targeting children instead of making changes that would be much less effective later on in life.
