Police shoot religious rioters
In Bhubaneswar, India on Wednesday August 27, 2008 news was announced that a major Hindu religious leader was shot along with four of his disciples.
This action caused an outrage among the community. A curfew was called upon due to the many riots and attacks. This situation was bigger than seen before. Many not involved tried to leave but the access roads were blocked. Even Pope Benedict XVI was shocked.
As many as nine people were killed, among them a woman who was working at an orphanage. It has been reported that around fifty four people had been arrested. This all started due to the conflicts of the Hindu-Christian believers and the Christians. The Hindus believe the Christians are targeting their followers to convert. The different religious beliefs of all can cause many destructive actions.
India is hardly along in the fights between different religions. I feel it is always sad when different religious cause so many problems, especially physical. In America we have freedom of religion although the same problems faced in India this week have happened here in America. I like to think people are more open to others beliefs but it is not always that way. We have come a long way over time and I only hope that it will get better and that people may not agree with each other’s views they should respect them.

This certainly shows a hint of religious solidarity even in the face of adversity. I must say, this article proves tolerance is prevalent in the face of intolerance, albeit the latter paints a picture so black we forget to see the white spots. It just goes to show progress is not progressive.
