Martika Bigham- A Haitian school under attack

The article I read for this week was about a school in Pétion-Ville , Haiti, called SOPUDEP, which was being threatened to get shut down. The school is run by a local grassroots organization whose acronym stands for the Society of Providence United for the Economic Development of Pétion-Ville. Despite the children’s excitement to learn, they may not have a place to do so. The mayor of the town is responsible for this happening. He ignored a legally binding lease for the schools current location. The school has gone through many troubles. such as being bombarded by the police and security personnel while trying to be forcefully evicted. As of now the lease is expected to expire in 2012.
When I read this article didn’t shock me but it did make me think. Here in America we take things like education for granted. It’s a shame that people in other countries would be willing to fight for an education that we get for free, when here in America there are people dropping out left and right. If more people put themselves in the shoes of those who are in Haiti I’m sure they would see things differently. I hope the best for the children in Haiti. They deserve and education, just like everyone else.

I hate that violance is being brought into so many schools. I mean it is school and these are kids. What harm did they do to any one. It seems like schools are starting to be more more targeted.I hope that one day this will stop, but deep down know I will never see it stop.
