In Mexico, food prices have increased by 9.18 percent along with a 5.9 percent increase on consumption with in the past year. Mexicans raided the streets in response to this increase. The Mexican government started what is known as Community Gardens to help those people who fall close to poverty.
Teresa Trujillo's family took a huge hit when her husband, a carpenter, lost his job in the midst of the increasing food prices. So she looked jobs to help her family out in any and every way possible. She ended up running into one of these community gardens. These community gardens open jobs for those who really need it and teaches people about consumption. This follows the Trend the U.S. began, Back door Gardens, that over 25 million Americans have participated in due to high gas and food prices.
Mariano Salazar says "It's so that the residents of Mexico City learn how to be producers, and not just consumers." The government is pushing for this to take place in schools and jails and promoting the planting of vegies in backyards and on rooftop terraces.
Ms. Trujillo says working at the community garden really helped her out. I think that this is a fantastic idea. Starting these community gardens will open more jobs for people, and it is a learning opportunity also.
