“After Ramadan in Baghdad”

Reported by: Nicole Griffin
Eid ul Fitr marked the end of the Muslim fast during the month of Ramadan. While the fast ended the feasting was about to begin for many Sunni families in Baghdad on Thursday, but on this particular day deadly occurrences took place that were unexpected by many. “Pools of blood and the smell of burned flesh was everywhere and I saw a man of about seventy, bleeding and lying on the ground from injuries,” was quoted by a man who witness the horrific scenes of a suicide bomb attack in the district of Zafaraniya. The by stander’s description was after the alarming attack of a suicide bomber driving in a white car, in which crashed into a Iraq military vehicle killing ten people and wounding twenty-eight women, men and children. Along with the Zafaraniya bombing, there was also another plot by the suicide bombers in the New District of Baghdad taking lead by a young teenage boy. As the young boy approached the check point of the al-Rasul mosque, worshippers began to exit the building when he detonated a vest wired with fatal explosives. Baghdad has been afflicted with a string of bombings which has claimed the lives of many Shiite and Sunni worshippers.
I cannot imagine the pain felt by the families who have endured through the treacherous actions by suicide bombers. I can barely imagine losing any of my families by the shadow of death, let alone seeing my family dismembered by a lethal explosion. The pain must be immense to have such images filtered throughout their minds, whether it may be their wives, their husbands, their children or a innocent man walking away from worship.

I feel really horrible for these families that have lost loved ones especially during this time when their families are suppose to be together during the month of Ramadan. I couldn't imagine watching this happen to any of my family members.

I can't imagine witnessing something this horrific and then be forced to live with ever-lurking memories. This was supposed to be a time of celebration, a time where individuals could entrench themselves with family and look back on their accomplishments. It's reports like these that make me so thankful for not only my family but for my freedoms and my country as well. God has truly blessed us as a nation and this is something that should not be taken lightly!
