Russia's prime minister Vladimir Putin spoke recently about how he believes Ukraine should be criminally charged for helping Georgia during the five-day war between Russia and Georgia. I have two issues with this: Why is this important now and not earlier, and what makes this situation different than any other war? In other wars, countries help other countries, sides are taken, alliances created and kept. Along with this comes the strategic, and material help inclined to help under violent circumstances. Why in the world does Russia think that this is a problem? I'm sure they wouldn't be complaining if they were the ones receiving help. Also, Why now? Why didn't Putin reveal his interest in this "crime" earlier? Is it maybe because they feel stronger now that they have their own ally, or perhaps because Ukraine is already an enemy of Russia? Anyhow, Ukraine and Russia came to an agreement for their charge. Ukraine will have to gradually pay more for gas payments to Russia. Because Ukraine is now under Russia's radar, there is scare that Russia might attack Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula just as it has Georgia, so Ukraine must comply. And now it seems that Russia is still on top of the situation, because Ukraine and Georgia were recently denied entrance into the NATO at least for the time being. However there are still plans to gain entrance to Membership Action Plan as well as the NATO, with many of the North's compliance.

This issue between Ukraine and Russia was probably not voiced so much by Putin due to the fact that he already has enough on his plate. Dealing with worldwide criticism from the rest of the world for making a move on to Georgian turf is one thing and the domestic issues in Russia are another. Of course this is important to know that Putin thinks that Ukraine has commited a crime, but this issue hopefully wont get any larger than the economic sanctions that Russia has placed on Ukraine :)
