Canadian Labour Congress calls for debate on Temporary Foreign Workers Program
This article is about the “disposable” workers who immigrate to Canada for jobs. When the employer doesn’t need them anymore they are easily forced out of Canada. The workers feel that if they are good enough to be invited to work in Canada then they should be on a good path to citizenship. Women make up 59 percent of the workers. The article quotes, “ These women don’t see Canada as the land of equality and opportunity.” “Their status breeds abuse, exploitation and social exclusion. They know that they risk immediate repatriation when they complain about not receiving promised wages, about excessive work hours, about health and safety concerns or about deficient accommodation.” They can hardly have any kind of relationship with people in Canada because they are virtually hostages of their employers. So in turn, the Canadian Labour Congress has called for changes and a different strategy as to deal with these workers. They are the national voice of the labour movement. I feel like once again this is an example of a country with money and resources taking advantage of people with less education, money and resources. And yet again it seems to be the women that these employers choose. Just as we learned in class, the employers see women as more compliant and less likely to form unions. They are also more likely to have less education.
