UN chief see obstacles in helping Darfur

Kendall Tetsworth/ October 7, 2008 8:00pm/ wars and violence

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is delaying the deployment of troops that he promised to send to Darfur. 26,000 troops total have been authorized, 22,000 of which were to be deployed by the end of this year. There are increased attacks on UNAMID and UN personnel which is aiding in the delay of troop deployment. Ban Ki-moon stated that he had been speaking with Ukraine officials seeking their help in the matter. Ki-moon insists that the only way to end the war is through peace talks and agreements. Ban is also worried at this point about the lack of a ship to carry food supplies to over 3 million people in the horn of africa. The Canadian ship that previously transported the food cannot ship anymore. there is an october 23rd deadline for someone to step in and take the place of the Canadian ship. The UN security Council also approved the sending of naval ships to the coast of Somalia to aid in the transportation.

The situation in Darfur is getting no better. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it is getting worse, because it is already an awful situation. The delaying of sending the much needed troops takes away more hope from the people of Sudan. The pull out of the Canadian food transportation ship is also a huge issue because millions of displaced and starving people depend on the food sent from abroad. The fact that aid workers and UN personnel are being killed by the rebel military shows the world that they want to keep this war going. It will keep going unless someone really steps in and does something. The United Nations can throw money and military at the situation all they want, but the fact remains that the political discrepancies will still be there.
