Youths in Poverty Race

On the island of Fiji, the youth of the city Lautoka participated in a race to raise awareness on the increasing problem of not only poverty on their island but around the world. The Race against Poverty was organized by the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development (FRIEND) a non-government organization in Lautoka.

More than 100 adolescents participated in the daylong event, running through 24 pit stops around the city, while youth leaders informed the public on youth and poverty issues.

The participants had to follow these pit stops through given clues and they were required to print signages with poverty slogans, sing their national anthem, carry out a mock clean-up campaign and perform demonstrations on health-related issues. FRIEND hopes to simply provide and out-of-the-classroom experience for young adults, cause a social reflection on poverty issues, and make a step further in trying to eliminate global poverty.

I think is is great for the youth to be physically involved in fighting against poverty. I would love the experience to be involved in an opportunity like that on our campus. We must make the youth aware because they hold the world's future in their hands.
