Summary
Healthcare professionals gathered last week in the Middle East Regional Diabetes Summit to discuss the consequences of the disease. It is estimated that about 35 million people in the African and Middle East regions that were affected by diabetes in 2007. It is believed that diabetes and the complications will rise to 65 million people by 2025. At the two day event, world experts shared their insights on the treatment and management of Diabetic Painful Neuropathy (DPN or “nerve pain”), and dyslipidaemia (high cholesterol). These are common but serious conditions that are associated with diabetes. These conditions can lead to death. Twenty six percent suffer from DNP. The symptoms of this include attack of shooting pain. Dyslipidaemia is high cholesterol which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral arterial disease. Therefore healthcare professionals need to understand the significance of risk factors in order to inform the people who have diabetes. Patients need to be aware of the conditions and effects that diabetes can cause.
Reaction
I agree with the healthcare professional that people in the African and Middle East regions need to be aware and informed of the consequences of diabetes. I did not realize that there were more than 35 million people who are affected by diabetes. I was also unaware that diabetes can cause conditions such as Diabetic Painful Neuropathy, and dyslipidaemia. I believe that if people were more aware of the serious problems and risk that diabetes can cause than they will realize that there are treatments available. I hope that the world healthcare experts will be able to get people informed about the problems that diabetes can cause.
