Many instances throughout today’s world, when we think about economic and political issues, we only think of them as being hard on men. However, in these tough economic times, many are starting to see how the issues are affecting women just as much, if not more, than men. Not only are women still majorly taking the role of homemaker, but they are also working as professionals as much as men are in today’s society. In this article, the discussion is how delegates from 100 countries are meeting this week in Brussels to discuss the women’s positions in global labor struggles.
The theme of the conference is “Decent Work, Decent Life for Women.” The conference will look at women workers and how they relate to challenges such as social welfare policies and union activism. This will be the first meeting for the International Trade Union Council World Women’s Conference. Some of the issues that will be discussed are those such as, even though women have very important economic roles in society, there is no country that has achieved wage equality between men and women. Also, racial discrimination is still very evident, more so for women than men. Women are also more discriminated against in the informal sector, which is a very large portion of labor in the U.S. as well as in countries throughout the world.
The conference is hoped to increase women’s empowerment in political participation and especially in the area of labor activism. Since women are underrepresented in organized labor and with the current economic crisis, the conference will have their work cut out for them.
I think that the whole idea of having a conference for improving women’s rights as far as public recognition as well as political is a great idea. I hope that in the future more can be held and that eventually the topic will be acknowledged and more supported. Hopefully, this conference will improve the rights of women not only in the political way but also in the actual work place.
