Blog #9: Alcohol: A Potential Killer

How people die from drinking

Alcohol, one of the most potent drugs on the planet, has become a major problem in society in a number of ways. Deaths that are caused by alcohol reach into the tens of thousands each year, meaning that it is one of the top killers next to traffic accidents and heart disease. Although alcohol is not typically the primary cause of the death of an individual, alcohol is able to single handedly kill you as well as lead to other factors that can cause death. Recently, Amy Winehouse, died of alcohol poisoning. Alcohol poisoning is typically described as the effect alcohol takes on the body when too much alcohol is consumed. Typically, the percent blood alcohol for a person with alcohol poisoning can range from .20 to .40 depending on factors such as weight, tolerance, etc. With an individual experiencing alcohol poisoning, body systems start to shut down one by one, creating a serious medical problem that can lead to death very quickly.

With alcohol being a potential “silent killer” in our society, there are a number of reasons why alcohol has proposed a social problem to the world. With the potential effects of alcohol being so severe on the body, teenagers and college students experimenting with the substance have not been educated to the proper extent regarding the dangers of alcohol and its potential consequences. With hundreds of college students around the world ending up hospitalized due to alcohol poisoning, it is very important that students are educated to the greatest extent about alcohol and its impairment on the body.
