Once again, there have been bitter dealings between the people of Pakistan and those of India over territory. The particular area in disarray these days is Kashmir. On Wednesday, gunmen believed to be from Pakistan, went to Indian-controlled Kashmir and the outskirts of Jammu on somewhat of a rampage. About eleven people were found dead on Thursday morning, including that of the gunmen, hostages and several others. The gunmen actually trapped themselves in a two-story residential home and began a battle, going back and forth with troops from the Indian Army. They originally attacked an army post, killing one soldier and eventually killing two more just before they took shelter in this home where they held a family. Unfortunately, relations since 1947 among Pakistan and India have been mangled. The Hindus and Muslims have also been at odds with each other in recent months, as they were protesting over 99 acres of land crossed by Hindu pilgrims to their holiest shrines. India continues to accuse Pakistan of setting up guerilla tactics in order to distract Indian border guards in the effort to get militants across the border. Pakistan denies the allegations that Indian officials have claimed. To sum up this story on a good note, seven women and children were rescued on Thursday morning.
I remained a bit confused as to the nature of the territories. I’m not exactly sure how the land is divided up, but no one seems to be happy. In all actuality though, Pakistan had no right going to Indian-controlled Jammu. In this particular article I feel like it’s in black and white. The gunmen were simply looking for Indian targets. The hostages were unfortunately caught in the middle of a situation that should have been resolved in 1947. I feel that in this case the Pakistanis just want more control, period. I hope I understood this story correctly, it is very sad that those who did die were the victims of such hatred and/or greed. I hope both sides can eventually find a happy medium.
