Okot Odhiambo, the deputy leader of Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army has been killed, along with eight others, said people at the Juba peace talks. The LRA is experiencing a lot of turmoil right now as to how they will tackle the peace agreement. Joseph Kony, leader of the LRA, and his 2 deputies, (one of which is now dead) are wanted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Kony wants to see these charges dropped before he will sign the peace agreement. Ugandan government leaders have left Juba and President Museveni has been reported saying that Kony and his army are not serious about signing the agreement. The government leaders have agreed to come back if and when the LRA decides to sign. Last week, the LRA negotiator David Matsanga resigned his position saying that there was nothing left he could do to further the peace agreement. A “cessation of hostilities” agreement will expire this week between the Ugandan government and the LRA.
This is the same old story, each week it seems one more person has resigned or gone missing or been killed. Each week there is another delay in the LRA signing, or another thing they are asking. I know that Kony wants to be able to live through his sentencing, but with all of the violence and chaos he has caused, I cannot imagine that is a possibility. I know it must be incredibly scary for him to do, but he needs to own up to what he’s done in complete responsibility-regardless of whether or not he is tried in The Hague.
