Recently, large numbers of unemployed workers are heading back to school in order to attain degrees to qualify for certain in demand jobs. Some community colleges are also starting programs to help pay for tuition for laid off workers, for instance, Montgomery Community College in Pennsylvania currently has instated a program which allows workers laid off since September 2008 to take 12 hours worth of credit hours completely free. One of the most popular concentrations seems to be in computers and accounting. Unfortunately, though, the article also states that this spike in applications for admission into community college has also caused community colleges to turn down some applicants, which puts the applicants who were turned down into difficult positions.

While I am glad to see a general trend of people reverting back to higher education and going back to school, I am concerned about over inflation of credentials in the job market. With more and more people becoming overqualified for certain positions, it makes getting certain well paying jobs more difficult and costly to attain. Not only does it make these jobs difficult to attain, it continues to perpetuate the American population into an ever increasing spiral of debt, making it harder and harder to “dig ourselves out of the money hole.” Even intellectual high paying jobs are being outsourced now to cheaper workers in India, such as jobs in the profession of law. We need a reformation of our current career system to help ease the debt on the American public.

  1. Thats pretty interesting. I wonder though, if most of those people are heading back for more of a tech-trade progrm, one they can finish quickly to provide additional career options. Either way it looks like being a college professor might be allow for some good employment opportunities. I agree though, it a daunting outlook.

  3. School is very important and I believe that most people should attend school. It's sad to hear that people are losing jobs but then again school may allow them to get better jobs. There's a lot that comes to play though like tuition and how you are going to keep up with school since you don't have a job.
