Blog #9 Brazil Oil Spill: Chevron Charges To Focus On Safety

On November 18, 2011 an oil spill in an offshore field operated by Chevron at Bacia de Campos in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The court case, to find out whether or not Chevron was recklessly drilling or a miscalculation, is taking place this week. The prosecutor plans to allege that Chevron should not have drilled a deep-water well that caused this leak. The leak was less than .1% of BP’s oil spill and in the Chevron’s oil spill no oil reached shore. The environment that the spill took place in was not critically hurt. There have been spills that were much larger and more damaging by Petrobras, which is state run. Petrobras owns 30% of the field operated by Chevron, yet Petrobras is facing no criminal charges. if charges are filed like expected on Chevron, the company and officials will face years of legal action.

It is very sad to read about oil spill that happen in today’s society, because we are so depended on oil. These oil spills seem to be happening more and more and thankfully there is some legal action that is taking place. Environments suffer greatly from oil spills even if it was not a great one. The food chain and the whole ecosystem are thrown off. There should be some kind of punishment that should take place because companies should know better. Also everyone that is involved with the whole business should be punished not just the middle man.
