Blog #9: European Commission calls for Unified Response to Cybercrime Threats

This week as I was searching for a current event on crime, I came across an article that discusses the major problem of cybercrime in the European country. The title of this article is, “European Commission on calls for Unified Response to Cybercrime Threats, “ by Alastair Stevenson. Not only does this article discuss the major problem of cybercrime in Europe but it also elaborates on how it is going to take everyone to come together to end cybercrime. When I say that they need everyone to come together, the following quote shows what that means: “We need everyone-governments, businesses, and individuals-to work together and share the responsibility of making Internet safe and secure.” The European Commissions Vice President, Neelie Kroes, believes that this is exactly what it will take to decline cybercrime.
This current event on crime holds a lot of significance. Not only is a cybercrime a major problem in Europe, but it is a big problem for society all around the world. In this article, a plan of action to solve the cybercrime issue is elaborated and shows that if everyone works together it will be successful. From a sociological perspective, this article is beneficial to members of other countries as well because Europe’s plan of action can be used and be just a “ s successful in other countries. The following quote from the article shows that cybercrime is affecting everyone, so therefore, everyone needs to come together to be able to end it: "These threats affect everyone. They could damage not just governments or critical infrastructure...The threats come from around the world and readily crosses borders.” This statement also shows that it is going to take all countries to coordinate a plan of action, Europe can’t end cybercrime alone.
