Blog 5 : Islamic Radicals in Mali

In the northern part Mali Islamic radicalism have began to harshen their crimes by cutting off limbs, stoning people in the street, and even whipping innocent people in the streets of Israel. These acts of hatred are a result of citizens not following the Islamic law known as Shariah, such as  going as far as restricting what types of ringtones their citizens can have also they aren’t allowed to smoke cigarettes  or drink liquor. Women are also being targeted the most for not following the rules of not wearing jewelry, perfume, or covering their heads while out in the public eye. Since northern Mali  has been taken over there have been at least 8 accounts of amputations due to the aggressiveness of the radicals along with elderly citizens being beaten and falling out. The radicals are able to keep their strong holding on Mali because of the fall of the government which has weakened this part of Mali. The use of child soldiers in becoming a growing problem because parents are being abused and dying many kids are left with very little protection which leaves them in the hands of these radicals, the children are as young as 12 and are fighting for something they may or may not even believe in. It is very difficult to get help inside this region of Mali because it is highly dangerous and activist run the risk of being killed. At least half a million people have fled since the take over and there will be many more to come unless this is put to a stop.
personally think the situation in northern Mali should receive more attention than it has been, a lot of people are unaware of things happening around them like this. This is affecting Mali as a whole if the problem doesn't get taken care of all of Mali may be taken over by these radicals. The people responsible for this matter are not the radicals, these radicals have been convinced by underlining sources who are in other countries, that the rules and regulations of  the Shariah need to be enforced upon the people and if they do not listen they must be dealt with, having these types of rules puts many lives in danger. Another main issue I believe should be hit hard on is the use of child soldiers, this not a problem just in Mali but in many places. When a child's parents are killed due to harsh punishments they are left on the street to fin for themselves leaving them open to help the radicals enforce their army. I believe that the UN should step up and take control of the situation.
