On Thursday September 13, 2007 an important Sunni sheik leader in Iraq was killed due to a bomb planted near his home in Anbar Province, only ten days after a meeting with President Bush. Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha along with two of his bodyguards were killed in Ramadi by the roadside bomb. No one claim responsibility for the killings but U.S. Officials point to Al-Qaeda as being the most likely suspect. The death of Abu Risha comes as a striking blow to the effort to recruit tribal leaders to fight terror. During a visit to Iraq this month President Bush praised Abu Risha for his leadership and courage along with others saying, "who have made a decision to reject violence and murder in return for moderation and peace."
The death of Abu Risha is a very tragic event on the war on terror. Abu Risha helped unite Iraqis and others to fight against Al-Qaeda and help the United States in anyway possible. By killing him Al-Qaeda has tried to set an example that if any Iraqis stand along side the United States or other allies they will face the same conclusions "death and chaos". It seems to Al-Qaeda all people are fair game when it comes to terror including religious leaders, women and ever children and if the U.S. leave Iraq things will only get worst not only for the Iraqi people but the world in general.
