Blog Post # 8 Mexico Turns to Social Media for Information and Survival

This article is about how Twitter and other social networks influence how crimes are solved. Social networks such as Twitter are very helpful about getting news out and making people aware of dangerous situations. The ironic thing about this article was that the Veracruz’s State Assembly wanted to make it a crime to use Twitter and other social networks to undermine public order, and in this situation the Mexico city police department was able to find 35 bodies that three masked gunmen had dumped thanks to Twitter. Mexico has been known for creating these types of laws regarding modern technology. Using social networks can be both good and bad because some people can display deceiving information. For example two people in Veracruz were charged with terrorism because they spread a false rumor that schools were under attack which caused a large number of traffic accidents. I found it very interesting that many Mexicans feel like these social networks such as Twitter and Facebook are a necessity to their everyday lives. Social networks are good for getting news out whether it is true or false and it’s a good way for users to be aware of what is going on. This article states that” the state and the press are weak, while organized crime is becoming stronger and, in some places, replacing the state.” This statement was true to some extent but I feel that the state needs to step up and take more control over regulating their laws and making some drastic changes.
