The mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg called on protestors to report crimes taking place in Zuccotti Park. His point was that not reporting crime endangers all New Yorkers. The same day the mayor spoke one protestor was charged with sexually abusing a park occupant. These protestors had been chastising perpetrators of crime ejecting them from the park, rather than letting the police know. The police were on call and ready to assist the protestors by investigating all alleged criminal activity. They could not do so because the protestors had a moral obligation to enlist the police’s help. The mayor stated that when the protestors that were victims of crimes spoke up the police were able to move swiftly and make arrests. He also stated that protestors don’t have a right not to report crime and it is not fair because other people are affected. When he held this forum he spoke not only about crime in the city, but also took questions from the audience. He did not say whether or not the park would be closed due to protestors though.
This is indeed a social problem. Like the mayor stated it is not fair and the protestors do not have a right to not report crime. When they don’t report what is going on law enforcement can’t be effective and it puts other citizens in jeopardy also. Crime is something that is going to exist, but it can be prevented and limited. The protestors have a right to their moral rights and beliefs, but this issue is one of public safety and affects many.
