Blog #10 Stop the scourge of child trafficking

Ricky Martin, the multiple Grammy-award winning musician, is also a UNICEF good will ambassador. Martin stated in the article, “I witnessed the horrors of human trafficking as we rescued three trembling girls living on the impoverished streets of India. Preventing these girls from falling prey to this horrendous crime was a personal awakening.” His foundation, The Ricky Martin Foundation, shines light on the true facts about child trafficking. In 2004 he launched People for Children to provide education and solutions for international efforts to eliminate child trafficking. According to the 2011 Trafficking in Persons Report trafficking, which consists of 27 million people, generates up to $32 billion annually. 1.2 million of that 27 million are children who are trafficked every year to work as forced labor and in prostitution and in other forms of slavery. To prevent these crimes, they launched an online bilingual child safety website that provides tools to protect children from pornography and sexual exploitation.
Child trafficking is a billion dollar business happening all over the world and it is also one of the most hidden crimes of all. There are lots of websites that you can go to that try to help with the ceasing of child trafficking such as Stop Child Trafficking Now and HumanTrafficking.org. Most of the children that are being trafficked are also introduced to sex trafficking as well. Some are saying that human trafficking all together is increasing and the people that are being trafficked to other countries are afraid to tell anyone what has happened to them, mainly because they have been threatened by the people running the whole operation.

  1. Child slave trafficking is such a huge issue! It is great to see people in the spotlight working towards things that truly matter, and creating a greater awareness.
