Blog Post #11 - World headed for irreversible climate change in five years, IEA warns

The article I read was about the dangers of emissions and the level in which they become unsafe. An analyst says that in five years if something does not change on the emissions, they will be at unable to reverse the damage that has been done. The unsafe level for emissions is 2c but we read that 1.5c can also be dangerous. The problem is that buildings recently built still operate without renewable resources and will likely continue the pattern. This is called the “lock in effect” in which irreversible change is caused, and is a result of anything that has been built in recent years that produces carbon, because it will probably continue to for decades to come.

There has been talk of a contract that limits energy usage between several nations, some of which are large industrial centers. The problem is the resolutions are set too far ahead in the future and if they do not act quickly it could be too late. Fatih Birol is the chief economist at the International Energy Agency who is worried about the near future. Birol thinks we must act quickly, and compared the situation to changing investment patterns before disastrous results occur. I also think they should act quickly because of the urgency and short time. It is sad that if not action is taken by 2015, the levels will have risen to 90 percent of the “carbon budget”. I hope this could really show that there is a sense of urgency and result in action.
