In class we have defined for it to be a global problem it must be where people have come together to find a solution for something wrong affecting people around the world. This article discusses how finally women are getting productive roles in journalism and media, especially covering the news in war and political problems. Most of the article I have read have all been negative things facing women and how we can try to change them. This is interesting because it was seen as a problem that needed to be changed and slowly but surely is doing so. In early times, women were restricted to write about family and social issues only. Then the men were left up to the “juicy” material like crime, politics, and economics. The problem with male dominating the war coverage in media is because it is one sided. Most destruction that occurs in war happens to women and families. Therefore the article says that it is best to have the women covering the issue. They have also determined that if women write more, they will touch on deep coverage, not just the weapons, deaths, rapes, and other brutal aspects. Then in return with women mentioning on these factors, it will encourage men to do the same.
“Yes, they are victims – but they are much, much more than that. And their stories, the way they cope with war and try to rebuild shattered lives, are much more complex and deserving to be properly told.” This quote says it all! Women are just as much as part of the action as men are. So therefore their stories and opinions must be taken seriously too. Also it takes a lot of strength and bravery as the article mentions for a woman to go out there and risk herself in danger. It is only respectful to listen to her influential words. http://www.thenewsmanual.net/Resources/whats_new_in_news10.html

I agree with you in that having women be a part of the more "gritty" stories especially involving the war is only a good thing. But I don't agree that only women can bring the softer family side, and that men only focus on weapons, rape and violence. I think that at one point in time, this stereotype was very real and something that needed to be changed, but continuing to view it this way only pushes the stereotype further, and sets us back.
This is true and visible in the media that women do not cover the war as much as males. Although, this article is giving women more opportunity to cover these stories, it seems a though women are still seen as not capable. I agree that women should have more roles and more say when covering the media.
I do think it is time for women to speak up, and for those around the world to listen to what they have to say. Even women from very oppressed areas in the world have begun to take on more nontraditional roles such as media and government positions. Men and women experience things in completely different ways, so hearing a woman's viewpoint can shed light on dimensions that would otherwise go unnoticed.
