Women gain legislative seats in Kashmir

Women gain legislative seats in Kashmir focuses on how the women in the Pattan, Kashmir, India play an important role in the government’s legislation. Women are encouraged to run for these positions and there are a certain amount of seats reserved for literate women. However most of the women that run for these positions are women that are illiterate. These women came from a generation where education wasn’t important. Now, government officials are pushing the importance of education for the new generation. The government wants more literate women to run for these positions because they feel as though they can produce positive results that illiterate women can’t. Other officials feel that it is important to give these women a chance. Literate women are afraid to run for these positions due to the dangers that these women face. Most of the women who have already been chosen for the government positions were at one point in time threatened and even disowned by their family members. Women are being put into these positions to bring awareness to the importance of education, availability of water, transportation and medical services.
I feel that the importance of having a significantly large amount of women representing the government is great for this country. The fact that they see a woman’s presence within the government shows the growth of the country. This should be an important transition for all other countries because women have very strong opinions that should be represented in all governments. I feel that our government doesn’t put that much enfaces on having women within our legislation. The fact that they are giving these illiterate women these positions amazes me because I do feel that everyone deserves a chance. However, it would be more beneficial to this country if these women became educated or more educated women filled these positions. I’m sure that the illiterate women have a lot of drive and determination to change things for the new generation since they suffered from the lack of many important essentials to life such as education, health care, and transportation.
