Newsweek International sheds light on what is being termed "English Fever" as more and more countries are focusing on English as a second language. China is leading this trend by reporting that 175 million Chinese now study English. Chinese parents are starting to feel the pressure to introduce their children to English through the growth of English cram schools that are popping up. Some areas are developing English Villages that consist of post offices, pharmacies and the like where children can practice their English skills. However, China is not alone in the trend as Austria, Spain, Norway, and South America have some sort of English program standard in place in their school systems. The article states that English is essential for those hoping to compete in a globalized world. Ultimately, it appears that the ability to speak English is a key factor to success in international business which may be a feeding factor to the trend. Reportedly, a Chinese child can boost their potential salary by 25% by speaking English. Lanuage experts believe any nation that ignores English learning does so at its own peril.
I believe that this article says alot about the influence that America has in other countries. I hope we use it wisely. However, it is also reflective of the importance that other countries place on education. Unfortunately, I feel Americas education standard is slipping compared to our international counterparts.
