In a poll by Pew Global Attitudes it was stated, “People in free, wealthy countries are much more pessimistic about their children's future than in poor, often dictatorial, nations. When Western parents look ahead to their children's generation, they see a more dangerous world, a shallower world.” A frightening statistic by UNICEF shows us how people are affected by poverty; “about half the world's population - 3 billion people - live on less than $2 per day.” According to UNICEF, 30,000 children die every day from poverty-related causes. A billion children live in poverty, 400 million of them without access to running water. It is sad that people don’t care about dying children, however they only care about themselves. Saul Singer states, “Poverty, moreover, is the greatest environmental problem, since the pattern is that countries pollute horribly as they develop and clean the mess up when they get rich enough to do so.
In my opinion I think that poverty is a huge issue that affects people globally. I think it is really sad that people don’t chose to be poor but are born into poverty and that it takes 3 generations for a family to get out of poverty. I also don’t understand why American’s are so selfish and don’t appreciate what we have in contrast to other countries that have practically nothing. I think the statistic that hits me the most is “30,000 children die EVERY DAY from poverty-related causes.” I couldn’t imagine 30,000 innocent children dying from poverty, something that they couldn’t help and nobody saw the need to help. I think it would hit people more if we saw what was going on in poverty stricken countries, not saying we don’t have people in poverty here. However, I don’t think people really understand how bad it is in other countries. We need to stop being so selfish and help other countries out with the poverty issues and save the many lives that are lost a year to poverty.
