f the urbanization trend continues we will see the gap between rural and urban areas economies widen even more. In the past five years Tokyo has expanded it’s population by 460,000, but is not alone. Other metropolitan areas have also seen an exponential increase in its construction of housing and condominiums, also due to rapid population growth. With all this rapid urbanization comes criticism from the government. With the critics being both for and against urbanization this article supports the idea. Urbanization is said to boost economic growth, and will increase its effects, as high-tech industry-electronics, medical care, and finance become more of a driving force. Also because large cities are clustered together, they have more to offer for the public. Such as hospitals, museums, jobs, and care for the elderly. These things are very rare in rural towns and villages. Although these critics believe the positive outcomes of urbanization outweigh the negative, they still understand that there needs to be solutions for the problems they would face. Since urbanization creates traffic jams, commuter crowds, crime, and population, they have come up with a few solutions. Such as staggered working hours to help commuters, and to lessen rush hour loads. Also relaxed floor space regulations in Tokyo would allow for more high-rise condominiums in the inner city that would also cut down on the commuter’s traffic.
I like this article because it gives the reader a different point of view for the effects of urbanization. By supporting urbanization they are saying that it leads the way for a better economy, and provides it’s citizens with a better lifestyle than they could have in a smaller village or community. I also like the fact that it gives solutions for the problems they will face, however I’m not sure if the solutions they offer are enough to make a difference. Staggering the work hours would have to be implemented to actually work, and I’m not sure if the employers would be willing to do so. Also by clustering a lot of people together you will eventually run into more crime and violence due to different backgrounds, cultures, and morals coming together in a tight area. So I think they should evaluate the effects of that as well. Whether or not urbanization is viewed positively or negatively it’s going to happened sooner of later, ready or not.
