A competition for a video game called "Counter-Strike" was played out by an unusual crowd on Wednesday, September 12. Police officers from Tianjin, China fought in competition in an internet cafe. The players get real life scenarios with real life weapons and aim to increase their skills in fighting terrorists. This is a popular game worldwide with hundreds of thousands of players. This tactical video game has enhanced terrorism awareness to officers as well as improving self-protection in field missions after playing the game. However, this game is only a supplement to their traditional means of training.
I am skeptical of this training tactic being used as a "supplement" to traditional training. I am a nutrition student and we are taught that supplementation in your diet can sometimes be dangerous because you don't always know what your getting. Same concept applies here in my mind, the game may have real life scenarios and raise awareness of officers but what are they really getting from it. There could be some other aspect to the game that isn't being measured like does the game raise the officers inhibitions because they feel more experienced when in the game if they get shot they can always start over. I think it is probably a good idea to help the officers to get practice in real life scenarios but research should be done to determine other costs of this type of training.
