Due to the rise of childhood obesity across the globe, governments have decided to take a stand. This new program introduced more fruits, veggies, and lower fat milk into thousands of children's daily luches. A survey from the NAtional Foundation for Educational Research says this meal plan has "helped thousands more pupils eat five portions of fruit and vegtables daily". Another study that was conducted in north-east England by the same foundation concluded that "the number of children eating their five-a-day has increased substantially". These children are now eating more vegtables than ever before, including children that brought a packed lunch to school with them.
Health Minister Ben Bradshaw said "it provides an opportunity for children to try out new foods.. vegtables and for them to become accustomed to eating them as part of their daily diet". This is great news for everyone! Studies also show that eating at least five portions of friut and veggies a day could "lead to an estimated 20% reduction in overall deaths from chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer". Even though this is not as accepted by the students as it is for their parents and the administration, we can not stop pursuing such a great program. It is shown that 20% less school lunches are being bought because "kids don't like change".
