Cameroon; Law on Urban Development un...

There was a one-day seminar on the rapid urbanization in Cameroon on Tuesday. The seminar was an attempt to aid the impacts of urbanization on the city. Since it’s Independence, Cameroon has faced a population explosion causing many problems for the city and its dwellers. The law for urban spacing has never been implemented in the last 40 years due to this prompt population growth, which has made it impossible for the City to handle the problmes caused by urbanization. These problems include anarchical growth of towns, degradation of environment, poor hygienic environments, and a feeling of insecurity within the city. To help control these problems a town code was passed in 2004, but has never been implemented. Thus the reason for the one-day seminar on popularization of implementing the town codes, and control of urban space, security, and health concerns.

This article shows how one nation gained its Independence, but because it wasn’t prepared for the rapid effects of urbanization, it’s facing the hard hits it can pack. Although the City is trying to change these problems, it has seemed nearly impossible because the population growth hasn’t let up. So laws and codes haven’t been implemented, and things just keep getting worse. So Cameroon is caught in the vicious cycle of urbanization, and will continue to be unless some action is enforced. I like the fact that the seminar was held, which is a good step. Now the laws must be put into effect as soon as possible. I do however think it will take more than just City Codes to pull Cameroon out of this cycle they are in. Such as programs and agencies available to the growing public.
