There has been uproar in Kenya surrounding the recent Presidential election on December 27th, 2007. President Mwai Kibaki was elected for another five year term into office surrounding accusations of corruption, and fraud. Insurgents have devastated the area. It seems as if they have swept through Kenya and burned down classrooms during a rampant killing spree.
The UN has since ordered children back in schools. However, many children cannot return to classes, many of their old classrooms being used as camps for refugees. Children are being used as victims with incidents such as a 4 year old girl being set ablaze and an 18 month old boy burned on his genitalia with a burning hot spoon.
I can only imagine what this country must be going through right now. Not knowing the background behind the current political situation of the country, I cannot make a stance on if the demonstrations are right or wrong. However, making children into victims and taking away their right to learn is despicable. The children are not responsible for the hurt caused by this man, and the violence is only teaching them to go on and commit acts of terror in defiance in the future.
