Ashley Flaherty/Jan. 17, 1:31pm/Religious Conflict

Pope Benedict XVI was supposed to appear for the inauguration today at La Sapienza University in Italy, Rome. Though after protests by the students and faculty stating that the pope was not welcome there because of his views about Galileo. Fifteen years ago when the pope was a cardinal he claimed that he condoned the trial and conviction of Galileo. The trial in 1633 where Galileo argued that the earth revovled around the sun which contradicted the church's views at the time. Once convicted Galileo was forced to renounce his findings publicly. A physics professor at La Sapienza, Andreas Srova, felt that it was inappropriate for the pope to appear for the inauguration. So, the vatican announced that the visit would be cancelled. It is interesting that the pope would cancel his trip because some students and faculty did not want him there, I am sure that not everyone at the university felt this way. There are also going to be people that do not agree with the pope and that does not stop him, so why now? Is there more to why he cancelled the visit? Especially after he visited Turkey last year, that is mostly Muslim and made some insulting remarks about the Islam religion. It does not really make sense?

You're completely right. It doesn't make sense at all. There is no possible way for everyone to agree with every opinion of world leaders and public figures. It makes me nauseous to think that the world cannot just agree to disagree. It's completely impossible, I know, but it would be nice!
