Rob Jordan/ 01/17/08 War
In a recent NY Times article written by David Brooks, he suggests that not only is the war in Iraq losing ground politically, but now it is becoming evident that the American people have followed suit. In a recent poll, the US citizens, who previously could not stop talking Iraq, now have shifted their interest as we approach the upcoming election. Brooks states that domestic issues are moving to the forefront of the American mind, asking for a new "level of normalcy"on the homefront. It seems that candidates with a more humanistic view of world and domestic policy are much more attractive to the voter. Brooks links this chang to the "post-war' feel of this election, when really, people are just ready for a change.

I had mixed emotions reading this article. On the one hand, I am very pleased to see that the American public is finally ready to turn an eye towards some issues that we've been neglecting for quite a while. We need to repair our nation and reunite our people. It seems that we have been divided on this issue of war for so long, I agree that it is time for a change, any change. However, I still am firm on the fact that we desperately need to make sure that we don't forget how messily this entire situation was handled by our government. Putting the situation out of our minds won't help to remember how, moving forward, we need to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions. During this war effort we have given up personal freedoms, lost friends and family, and basically been mislead and manipulated. I am for moving on from 9/11, Iraq, and constant talks of terrorism, but not forgetting the actions and attitudes that put those problems in our lap.
