Conservative Rabbis to Vote on Resolution Criticizing Pope’s Revision of Prayer
I have been trying to keep up with Pope Benedict XVI’s activities and his doing’s around the world. Well recently on the week of Good Friday it was said that the Pope had revised the Good Friday prayer and he approved it. By approving this change it could mess up the Jewish-Catholic relationship. The assembly of Conservatives of Judaism will hold a meeting to come up with a resolution to this problem.
This prayer calls for God to enlighten the hearts of Jew’s, it was so that they may acknowledge Jesus Christ, as the savior of all men. The draft resolution of the prayer says to cast a harsh shadow over the spirit of mutual respect and collaboration, which has marked the past four decades, making it harder for Jews to get along with Catholics. On Tuesday the Pope Benedict released new wording for the prayer, part of a traditional Latin service.
Well the II Vatican decided that the Good Friday service should be prayed for the conversion of Jews, and by praying for the conversion of the Jews they are referring to the supposbly blindness and the calling upon God to uncover their hearts to Christ. The new translation of this prayer is basically saying the same thing but it is written in more modern terms. Lay Jew’s called this change a very dumb change and they don’t even understand why there had to be a change and how it would affect anything.
The Rev. James Massa says that the publication of the prayer and its interpretation by the Jewish community does lower the temperature a little, but he also said that they have persevered other kinds of problems in the past and that at the end of it they always have to sit to talk about it.
I think that the Pope sometimes just does things for just the doing, I mean what difference would it make to change the prayer if it basically talks about the same thing as the old prayer. I think that just by changing the prayer because of the Jewish conversion is kind of important but what I don’t understand is why he changed it to say the exact same thing
