Myanmar Opposition Leader Killed

Catherine McDuffie February 15, 2008 11:30 AM Global Conflict

Yesterday, a major leader of the ethnic minority group, the Karen National Union, in Myanmar was shot and killed. The man was named Mahn Sha, and he was shot repeatedly in a pickup truck in his hometown of Mae Stot right off the border with Thailand. No one has yet claimed responsibility for his death. Mahn Sha was a senior leader of the group for the past two years and served as a major contact with the pro-democracy movement. This pro-democracy movement was led by Aung San Suu Kyi, whose vision was followed adamantly by Mahn Sha. When Mahn Sha was killed he was helping exiled groups with peaceful resistance to the military regime.

I hate so much to hear about Mahn Sha’s death as I continue to hope for success among the Karen National Union to bring peace to the region. This situation with the military regime is so ridiculous, and the article also states that the military is planning to draft a constitution in May to legalize its military rule over the country which is highly upsetting and offers little hope for change for the area. I hope that one day soon a revolution will take place in Myanmar and change its course for the future. These citizens deserve to have freedom and to enjoy life, not fearing each day for their safety. I cannot imagine having to live the way they do, so oppressed by this military regime, and unable to do as they wish.
