The report highlights a new Pew Research Center study that suggests that Non-Hispanic whites will become a minority in the United States by 2050. Immigrants and their children will be responsible for 82%of US population growth in coming years.
The US population will grow to 438 million in 2050 from 296 million in 2005 if current population trends continue, with Non-Hispanic whites accountable for 47% of the total. 67 million will be immigrants, about half of the total will be from latin American countries, and 50 million will be their US-born children or grandchildren. By 2050 one in every five Americans will be a foreign-born immigrant, compared to one in eight in 2005. The reason for this is the low fertility rate amongst the white population while Latinos, the nations largest minority, has a higher fertility rate. This is also true for other current minorities. The white population will only increase by 4%. The Asian population will almost double in percentage terms, from 5 to 9%, while blacks will remain around 13% of the total. Around this time in 2050 the baby boom generation will retire almost doubling the elderly population.
While the data from the report is very interesting it is important to note that the growth projections are based on detailed assumptions about births, deaths and immigration levels based on recent trends. Obviously these trends can change and an immigration policy change for example could dramatically limit the growth. It is interesting to consider the effects on a nations ethnic profile as how people will identify themselves is the projected figures are accurate is very unclear.

This is very hard to believe. I never thought that white people could be the minority in our country when whites were the people who founded the country. This is interesting to me and I never thought I would hear something like this.
