400 Tibetans detained in protest

Emily Mader/24 March 2008/8:33pm/Human Rights

Roughly 400 protestors, mostly Tibetan, were arrested today during uprisings in Nepal. These uprisings occurred as a response to the unrest in Tibet’s capital of Lhasa, in which 130 individuals have been confirmed dead according to the Tibetan prime minister in India; China has only confirmed 18 deaths total. Protestors were detained from three separate demonstrations held in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu in front of the United Nations office. There have been demonstrations every day since March 14, 2008, when the conflict began in Lhasa, Tibet. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that the arrests of the protestors violated the rights to freedom from arbitrary detention and freedom of movement. The local police stated that all detainees will be released by this evening and that few injuries were sustained by the protestors.

It seems that there is pattern in how protests against the Chinese occupation of Tibet end: someone protests peacefully for a short amount of time and then is arrested. The majority of the injuries sustained during the conflict have been inflicted on Tibetans and other protestors. The fact that there is such a large disparity between the death count that the Tibetans give and the one the Chinese give signals a misstep on someone’s part. I think the Chinese government is using more force than necessary and committing recognizable human rights violations but is trying very hard to cover it up on the books internationally.

My first question would be what are the Tibetans protesting? I have not followed your blog topic but I wonder if they protest for rights or against their government. And it's crazy to think many people are dying when it was meant to be a peaceful protest. It seems every country has civil unrest of some kind and magnitude.
