newsobserver.com | Pork plant closing; 476 jobs ending: "Smithfield Packing Co., the nation's largest pork producer, said Monday that it will close its only unionized plant in the state and eliminate 476 jobs in Kinston.
The decision came after a team of engineers decided that it would be too expensive to upgrade the factory, which dates to 1948, with modern equipment needed to satisfy customers, spokesman Dennis Pittman said. Workers will be offered jobs at other Smithfield Foods facilities in Eastern North Carolina. 'We should have enough positions for pretty much anyone who wants to make the relocation,' he said."

I think that this is sad for all the people who have jobs. And even though they are saying that they will provide jobs for these people who have been working here for probably a very long time that means that they have to relocate. This means that they will have to move their families somewhere else and sell their homes and it is just a sad situation for everyone involved and a rediculous thing for them not to just make the improvements and let the people keep their jobs. I also wonder if its even true that all of the people who lose their jobs will be guaranteed jobs somewhere else. It seems sort of impossible but I dont know.
