Pelosi denounces Tibet Crackdown

Mark Moon / 10:17 AM / 3.21.2008 / Ethnic Conflict

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Dharmsala, India to speak about the Chinese crackdown on Tibet and the violent protests that are sparking from it. She is the first major official to visit the region since the crackdowns began. The Dalai Lama met with her amidst the cheers of crowds of Tibetans, seeking an end to the crackdown. Thousands of Chinese troops moved in on the small area of western China to further snuff out any indication of civil unrest.

Tension between Tibet and China has always been at a critical level. The Dalai Lama preaches passive, non-violent resistance which was adhered to for decades. However, a younger, more volatile generation of Tibetans are beginning to demand action. This is resulting in a number of riots and violent conflicts throughout the region. Pelosi's visit is an important step in bringing peace back to the area.

I hear everyday on the news about another violent riot that has broken out somewhere in the world. It is really scary that there is so much hostility between these two countries. Hopefully this will lead to some peace. I am glad that peace is being preached but most of the time it doesn't seem to affect how people act.
