Sri Lanka army claims more gains

Catherine McDuffie March 7, 2008 1:23pm Global Crime

The Sri Lankan army has claimed it has killed another 40 Tamil Tigers and lost 4 of their soldiers in battle. The government claims to be gaining ground with the rebel group. It is very rare for the government to produce evidence of the fighting but have done so now that 14 bodies of Tamil Tigers have been handed in to the Red Cross. Correspondents say both sides exaggerate the number of lives lost in battle, so it very hard to know for sure how many are dead. It is downplayed how many lives are lost on each’s own side as they like to pretend they are advancing better than they actually might be. Another reason why it is hard to know how many are dead is because the government does not allow journalists or reporters near the battle fields. On Thursday a Tamil Tiger was killed in a car explosion that the rebel group claims to have been put in place by the government. The government only says that it must have been done by the Tigers because it was on their territory.

It is becoming very clear how unreliable the Sri Lankan government is. Not only does each side lie about numbers of casualties and deaths, they do not have proof for any of the numbers whatsoever. It is really hard for me to support either side, especially since I do not know the historical background for why the rebels are fighting. I’m definitely going to find out more about the history of this conflict.
