US is Not Going to Interfere

Carla Neal/March, 2 10:25/Democracy

This week there was a short article in The Hindu newspaper quoting Tom Casey (State Department’s Deputy). He was talking about how the US was going to stay out of Pakistan’s newly elected government, letting them make their own decisions and organize the government however they want to. He also states that the US government did not interfere before the elections and they wouldn’t start now; however, he says that the US does want to continue working “closely and effectively with the Pakistan government on three fundamental things that are of concern to us.”

First of all I have to wonder what he considers “getting involved” to be because I remember not long ago the US and other countries, pushing the president of Pakistan into democracy through fair democratic elections or else. Now, while I am all for basic human rights and democracy, how is that not getting involved. Another thing, when it comes to setting up democracies I wonder if the US can really stay out of those new governments because as hard as we push democracy I don’t really see how we can stay out of their governments, meaning that if the do one thing that’s not considered democratic or anti democracy can we turn our backs or for the cause of democracy do we have to step in?

I feel like this is a step in the right direction, but at the same time I recognize it as simple rhetoric. The USA has a way of saying we will do things and then doing something else, so I kind of have the same expectation in mind. But, hopefully we will actually start respecting other countries' sovereignty.
