Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone met with President Raul Castro on Tuesday to express the Catholic church's concern about the prisoners being held in Cuba. Though the church did not ask the communist government to release the inmates. The cardinal states that the relationship between the Church and Cuba's government will always remain shaky but there is always the opprotunity to promote the well-being of Cubans. The Church expressed their concern for the prisoners well-being and their families. Though they did not ask Cuba to release the prisoners, they did propose the idea. Cuban authorities have said that they will allow more openness in the print press and the radio, and maybe in some cases television as well. During his visit his also commented on the U.S. embargo againist Cuba to be ethically unacceptable and wants to bring the world closer to Cuba. The communist government never outlawed religion but did expel priests and closed church based schools. But the Benedict stated the some catholics on the island are frustrated by difficulties and are full of mistrust.
I know that this was not necessarily a religious conflict but in a sense it is because Cuba's strict policies with church schools and what is said in the media is highly restricted causing the cathloic church to dislike the way Cuba does things. I think that the catholic church needs to let Cuba to what they want to do and maybe one day they will come around but that is up to Cuba's government to decide not the catholic church.
