Ugandan officials quit peace talks after delays

Catherine McDuffie 4/11/08 11:50am Global Crime

After Joseph Kony has refused to sign the peace treaty, Ugandan government officials have decided to go back to Uganda until the LRA is ready to sign. Peace talks in Juba, southern Sudan between the Ugandan government and the Lord’s Resistance Army have been going on for almost two years now. The Hague has warrants for Joseph Kony, leader of the LRA as well as two of his top deputies for their war crimes which include rape, murder, and abduction of thousands of children to serve as soldiers, porters, and sex slaves. Kony has said he will not sign the peace treaty until the ICC drops its warrants for him but the Ugandan government has said they will not take that part out until he signs it.

This conflict lays really heavy on my heart as I am part of an organization whose number one aim is to help end this war, end child soldiering in northern Uganda, and to get those who are displaced back home. It is so hard to say who is right in this situation because the Ugandan government is so corrupt. I think it is so wonderful that the LRA is willing to talk about peace, but I hope that they are able to come to some sort of safe agreement with the Ugandan government that is beneficial for the civilians who have had such a struggle for the past 22 years.
