Abortion rates highest amongst 'immigrant' women

Kari Leonard, September 18, 2008, 3:37pm

This article talks about how a new research claims that the abortion rates are highest among ‘immigrant’ women and that they feel the socioeconomic differences are to blame. The research consists of doctors that did a study in Norway of over 124,000 women who were pregnant and undergoing terminations. The women were between the ages between 15 and 49. The results were that the women between the ages of 20 to 24 and 25 to 29 had higher rates of termination in all ethnic groups. When the study comparing Norwegian women that were non-migrants to the women that were a labor migrants, and the labor migrants are defined as being women from developing or eastern European countries working in Norway, and refugees, the labor migrants had higher termination rates. Refugees had the highest rate among all ethnic groups. The article concludes as it states that the combination of low education and poor socioeconomic status seem to be important factors driving termination of pregnancy rates. Immigrant women need support to access counseling services for family planning. I am a person who doesn’t agree with abortion at all. This may make some of you mad but that’s my opinion on it. The fact that these women are not getting educated or counseled with needs to be dealt with. I feel as though the places where these refugees end up are not aware that they are even presently around them. I feel that something should be made to understand how to help these women. I recently found out that Greensboro is a city for ‘refugee relocation’ is what I would call it so I wonder if they have enough resources to be able to help these women, and if they do I would have to ask the question on what Greensboro would need to do next if this is the case, because maybe Greensboro could be the first city to help.

In some cases women find it necessary to kill in order to survive...not a very pleasant scenario but it is the truth...the God honest truth. I personally don't condone abortion due to upbringing but then again I can't have babies; I'm a dude! Women whose top priority is to survive do not have the capacity to care when their own basic needs must be met, and if they find themselves in a situation that could otherwise jeopardize that perhaps the most abhorrent thing becomes the only logical choice. In this case, we should offer our most deepest sympathies than condemnation, and understand why they chose that route.
