Oxfam calls for bold leadership to fight poverty

International aid agency Oxfam is fighting against rising food and fuel prices that have been devastating people all over the world. They are calling on world leaders’ work harder for the cause to reduce overall poverty.

This week in New York at a United Nations meeting Oxfam stated that higher food prices are the root of poverty’s problems. Hunger is not only painful but it directly affects their goal of reducing poverty because in order for people to work or get an education they need to be healthy and able.

Despite the Millennium Development Goal of halving world hunger by 2015, the number of malnourished people world wide has increased from 75 million to 925 million. Oxfam believes that there needs to be a dramatic shift political will to face this challenge.

While progress seems meek Oxfam believes that it is definitely possible. Malaria has been cut by two-thirds in the last two years, and a boy born in Tanzania is 25 percent less likely to die by his first birthday than his sister born just four years ago.

But in order for MDG’s goal an additional 150 billion dollars per year is needed by 2010. While this is unfeasible, Oxfam is still working with international agencies to launch new campaigns to inspire world leaders to keep their promises on helping global poverty.

I think groups like this help to show the U.S. and the world that people do care. Everywhere you look there is a cause that is worth fighting for. However food is like you said a viable source for us to sustain life.

I think this group has a good idea that other countries could learn from. It is a shame that as we in America eat, and over eat everyday, while people in other countries literally starve, and die from hunger everyday.

I am glad that there are people in this world who still care. Food is a vital part of life and we cannot live without it. But people still starve everyday throughout the globe that no one can be able to reach.
