I suppose this isn’t exactly a war and violence issue, but it is a cause of “war and violence,” however unexpected it may be.
South Ossetia was damaged in the Russian’s attack on Georgia, now Russia, already in alliance with Ossetia, has to help Ossetia get back on their feet while dealing with the people of Georgia. This plan to seize control over Georgia, in a way, is backfiring on Russia because now Russia now has to restore the economy of both poor countries. However, because of their alliance with one another, $400 million dollars is being put into reconstruction of Ossetia and a new gas pipeline is being built between the two as well, even though in Georgia one of the pipelines was cut off. Because Russia seems to be favoring Ossetia, other countries that are allies of Russia are being encouraged to separate. Meanwhile organizations, like Hamas (Palestinian militant group designated by the U.S. and European Union as a terrorist organization) is giving support to the war. This could lead to much trouble for the Russian militia as well as Russia’s economy and allies.
Thus, I’m back to my starting point, thinking what was the point in attacking a poor country, Russia? Just for the heck of it! It’s almost as if the cool kids at school want to expand to the next table, even though it’s beside the trashcans, but they decide it would be too mean to get rid of everyone who sat at the table before so they join them and end up having to buy their lunch. Their friends who have a different lunch realize what’s going on and get jealous so they’re contemplating not being friends anymore. Russia is now stuck, because they want a bigger table, but also need their friends.

I agree with you 100%. It seems as if Russia is simply going around just messing with and destroying other nations without actually thinking about how things are going to backfire. Russia needs to help get these nations back together and quit invading other nations because if they continue on the route they are on Russia is going to be all alone.
